Better still, many of the town’s cafés and pubs welcome four-legged visitors, making it possible to turn an everyday walk into a relaxed morning, lunch stop or full afternoon out.
From a gentle circuit of Poole Park to a coastal walk followed by a pub lunch, these dog-friendly combinations offer something for energetic dogs, older pets and owners who appreciate good food as much as fresh air.
Best for: an easy everyday walk and waterside coffee
Poole Park is a practical choice when we want a scenic walk without committing to a demanding route. Dogs are permitted in the open space, and the paths around the boating lake provide a mostly level circuit suitable for different ages and abilities.
The Kitchen sits directly beside the water and openly welcomes dogs, walkers, cyclists and families. Its lakeside position means we can stop for fresh coffee, breakfast, lunch or something sweet without needing to drive elsewhere after the walk. During spring and summer, the neighbouring Scoops kiosk also serves ice creams, drinks and quick snacks.
This is one of the easiest options for older dogs or anyone seeking a flexible route. We can complete a full circuit, shorten the walk when necessary or simply find a bench overlooking the lake before visiting the café.
Best for: harbour views and a relaxed pub meal
Hamworthy Park provides a more open coastal experience, with views across Poole Harbour towards the Purbeck Hills. Its combination of parkland, shoreline and waterside paths gives dogs plenty to investigate while owners can enjoy one of Poole’s quieter harbour settings.
Afterwards, The Yachtsman on Lake Road is a convenient dog-friendly pub and restaurant. Dogs are welcomed whether visitors are stopping for coffee or staying for lunch or dinner, while the menu includes familiar pub favourites, seasonal dishes and Sunday roasts.
Beach access for dogs changes during the year, so owners should check the current rules before allowing pets onto the sand. Across BCP beaches, dogs are generally permitted from 1 October until 30 April, while restrictions apply to many designated beaches from 1 May through 30 September. Dogs must remain on leads along promenades, piers, zigzags and footpaths.
Best for: a longer coastal outing and a comfortable pub garden
Canford Cliffs offers several possibilities for a dog walk, from the clifftop paths and leafy residential roads to the route towards Sandbanks and the surrounding coastline. We can adjust the distance easily, making it suitable for a brief leg stretch or a more substantial coastal walk.
The Canford is positioned in the heart of the village, only a short distance from the coast. The pub actively promotes its dog-friendly garden and nearby scenic walks, while pet-friendly bedrooms are also available for visitors staying overnight. Dogs staying at the hotel can receive a bed or blanket, bowl and treats.
Inside, the menu ranges from traditional fish and chips and bangers and mash to changing seasonal dishes. Its garden makes it particularly appealing after a warm-weather walk, although checking ahead for a dog-friendly table is sensible during busy weekends.
Owners planning to walk directly on the beach should remember the seasonal restrictions. From October through April, dogs have much wider access, while summer rules limit where they can use Poole’s main beaches.

Upton Country Park is one of Poole’s most complete dog-walking destinations. The estate covers approximately 160 acres of parkland, shoreline and formal gardens, with admission remaining free throughout the year. Parking charges apply.

The park has two enclosed dog areas: a training area in the northern parkland and a play pen in the newer southern section. Dogs are not permitted inside Spurrier’s Play Park, although the adjacent shoreline fields remain an off-lead area. Owners should follow the estate signage because rules vary between the formal gardens, play areas and wider parkland.

A walk beginning on Poole Quay can combine the historic waterfront with the more open harbour views around Baiter Park. We can pass fishing boats, pleasure cruises and working vessels before continuing beside the water towards Harbourside Park.
The route is largely flat and can be shortened easily, making it suitable for a casual weekend outing rather than a full countryside hike. Dogs should remain under close control around the busy Quay, particularly during summer events and crowded weekends.
