Poole’s bakery scene stretches far beyond standard sliced loaves and mass-produced pastries. Across Parkstone, Penn Hill, Broadstone and Canford Cliffs, local bakers are using slow fermentation, traditional recipes and carefully chosen ingredients to create everything from crusty sourdough and focaccia to fine patisserie and bespoke cakes.

This is not a definitive ranking. Instead, these five businesses have been selected because they represent different styles of baking and different reasons to visit or place an order.

1. Patisserie Mark Bennett

Patisserie Mark Bennett is one of the most established names in Poole’s modern bakery scene. Mark Bennett opened the first patisserie in Penn Hill with his wife Emma in 2012, after spending three decades working as a third-generation master baker in his family’s Poole bakery business. The company has since expanded to locations including Lilliput, Ashley Cross, Broadstone, Penn Hill and its Bakehouse in Fleetsbridge.

Its range makes it useful for much more than an occasional cake. Counters are filled with artisan bread, viennoiserie, savouries, sandwiches and fine patisserie, allowing us to collect breakfast, lunch and something to take home in one visit.

Bread remains central to the business. Its sourdough undergoes a slow fermentation of around 16 hours before being proved, shaped and stone-baked. The selection includes Pain au Levain, a German-inspired five-seed sourdough and Pain de Campagne baguettes. Signature products also include the bakery’s sausage rolls and Chocolate Antoine.

The ability to sit down with a pastry and Clifton Coffee also gives the patisseries a café atmosphere rather than feeling like simple collection counters.

Worth visiting for: Sourdough, fine pastries and a polished bakery-and-coffee-shop experience.

2. Crusty Bread Artisan Bakery

Crusty Bread on Ashley Road offers the atmosphere of a traditional neighbourhood bakery combined with a relaxed coffee shop.

Bread, cakes and pastries are made alongside a broader menu of breakfasts, brunches and lunches, meaning we can stop for a meal before taking a loaf or something sweet home. The bakery also offers handmade cakes with gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan choices.

One of its most distinctive products is its long-fermented “Tummy-Friendly” bread. The bakery explains that the dough goes through an extended fermentation and second rise, helping to develop the bread without preservatives, bleached flour, colourings or other additives. Although it is aimed at people with certain wheat or gluten sensitivities, it is not a substitute for certified gluten-free bread for anyone with coeliac disease unless the bakery specifically confirms otherwise.

Crusty Bread is located opposite Waitrose at the junction of Ashley Road and Richmond Road, with customer parking available behind the shop.

Worth visiting for: Artisan loaves, dietary choice and a friendly café-style lunch.

3. The Italian Bakery, Broadstone

The Italian Bakery brings a different collection of flavours to its Bakehouse in Broadstone.

Its bakers, cake makers and pastry chefs work overnight to prepare artisan bread, savouries, biscuits, desserts and patisserie. Italian influences appear throughout the selection, particularly in flavoured sourdoughs, focaccia and Sicilian lemon tarts.

This is an appealing choice when we want something beyond a conventional croissant or plain white loaf. Depending on the day’s counter, we may find cannoli, seeded breads, doughnuts, cookies, cakes and generously filled savouries alongside fresh sandwiches.

The Broadstone shop also serves the bakery’s own coffee, with dairy alternatives including almond, oat, soya and coconut milk. Its extended opening hours make it more flexible than many traditional bakeries, although product availability will naturally change as popular items sell during the day.

Worth visiting for: Focaccia, Italian-inspired pastries and a particularly broad selection of sweet and savoury bakes.

4. Bake Vibe

Bake Vibe provides a smaller, home-baked alternative to Poole’s established shopfront bakeries.

Based on Wallisdown Road, the business was created to bring homemade bakes to the Poole and Bournemouth community. Its selection includes cupcakes, mini cakes, celebration cakes and sweet enriched rolls prepared with different fillings.

The sweet rolls are particularly interesting because they draw on a richer style of traditional baking. Made from dough containing eggs and butter, they are associated with celebrations such as Christmas and Easter and can be prepared with fillings swirled through the bread.

Bake Vibe is better suited to advance orders and special treats than an unplanned café visit. Its personalised cakes can be adapted for birthdays, christenings and other celebrations, giving customers a more direct relationship with the person creating the order.

Worth ordering for: Homemade celebration cakes, cupcakes and filled sweet breads.

5. The Goldfinch Kitchen

For a cake designed to become part of the occasion itself, The Goldfinch Kitchen in Canford Cliffs offers a more artistic and bespoke service.

The business specialises in wedding and celebration cakes that combine carefully considered flavours with natural decoration. Its work is particularly associated with seasonal fruit, edible flowers and designs that feel elegant without relying on heavily manufactured decorations.

Customers can choose from a dedicated flavour menu and work with the bakery to create a cake suited to the event. Smaller treats are also available, including macarons, cupcakes and brownies, which can work as gifts or additions to a larger celebration table.

This is not a bakery we would visit for an everyday loaf. It earns its place because it demonstrates another side of Poole’s baking scene: highly personalised work created for weddings, birthdays and important milestones.

Worth ordering for: Naturally decorated wedding cakes, elegant celebration cakes and beautifully presented gifts.
